| 父が英国公使館に勤務していたこともあって、綺堂少年は、公使館にも出入りしている。劇作家を志した明治２０年すぎ、公使館の書記官であったアストンのところへ外国の脚本を読むために出かけている。 アストン氏ではないが、公使館の書記官は、綺堂の探偵小説｢穴｣の中にも登場する。 アストンとは子供の頃から世話になった人で、日本文学にもななかなか通じていると書いている。綺堂少年は、シェークスピア全集はまだ読めないということで、彼の知っている脚本のことを話してくれた。ところが、２１年(？）の夏に、アストンが銀座の歌舞伎新報社から出版された、河竹黙阿弥の脚本を見せた。これを借りて、綺堂少年は読み耽ったとある。（『ランプの下』「演劇改良と改作」１１３頁） さて、そのアストンとは、William George Aston (1841-1911)のことではないかと思う。彼には次のような著書があり、最近でも復刻されているようだ。 英国公使館では、アーネスト・サトウも有名だが、アストンの方も調べる必要があるのではないか。 ・神道 / W・G・アストン著、神道（Shinto）（安田一郎訳、青土社、1988.1）. ・A history of Japanese literature / by W.G.
